This day was the brainchild of the then President of the Garden Clubs of America and yours truly. I believe we announced it around 2000. The idea was to promote gardening as exercise, as a fitness program and not a chore or work on this day every year.
I have a sample press release on this Blog and my website.
Get the message out. We still have a long way to go.

Want to help promote getting fit through gardening? Review my book! There are dozens of online bookstores -- all have features where you can review the book. Add your review and make a difference.
On May 7, I presented my Get Fit Through Gardening concept to about 30 people in the Montgomery County Master Gardener's program in Mt. Ida AR (pop 900). This town is so small it does not even have a MacDonalds! But it is near beautiful lake Quachita, one of the cleanest lakes in North America.
While I feared that the audience might be dumbstruck with my unique stances and gardening techniques, the meeting was electric. Audience members shared stories about how they, too, modified their tools to prevent back strain and muscle soreness. Intrigued with my Lunge and Weed and the Stance, we discussed how they could integrate these new motions into their current gardening regimens. Rarely have I encountered so many who "got it." They truly understood the concept of gardening to exercise and exercising to garden.
It was a wonderful experience and I look forward to speaking to more Master Gardener groups.

With all the interest in going Green, how many of use have thought about adopting a Green Fitness Program? In other words, can we become stewards of the planet and stewards of our own personal fitness and well-being? Of course!
I told you there was a connection. Look at the information from Eckhart's bio below:
After many years of depression, at the age of 29, Eckhart Tolle had an epiphany “I heard the words ‘resist nothing’ as if spoken inside my chest,” he writes, saying he felt he was falling into a void. “Suddenly, there was no more fear.”
...what he did for the next 15 years is unclear; Mr. Tolle writes that he spent time wandering and sitting in London’s parks, with “no relationships, no job, no home, no socially defined identity,” but a sense of “intense joy.”
Sounds just like Christopher McCandless, who went into the wild. I go into my backyard. Maybe I'm risk adverse.

Strangley enough (although according the Celestine Prophecy there are no coincidences) I watched the movie, Into the Wild, on DVD this weekend while reading a New Earth, exercising in the garden, and creating this Blog (all this week).
Much to the dismay of my close friends, I often see an article, book or movie and relate it back to my quest to educate people about my ideas on getting fit through gardening/Dynamic Gardening/Aerobic Gardening. Yes, it has many names.
Eckhart Tolle's new book, A New Earth, an Ophah's Club selection, shares many concepts with my gardening/exercise approach.

20/04: April 20 Gardening
Well it's past the last frost date in hardiness zone 7a-7b (Memphis TN) where I live. After presenting my techniques and concepts on gardening and exercise at the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival last week, it's actually time to put my techniques into action.
No one is watching but I always garden the same. I stretch, use the lunge and weed, alternate motions and techniques (changing every song on your I-Pod is a good way to keep moving.)
